Superintendent’s May 1, 2024 Update

Dear APS Families,

It is hard to believe May is here already, as we approach the end of a successful school year.

I am just wrapping up my Spring visits to all schools and am so proud of our students and staff for the great work happening across the division. I had the opportunity to observe classes, speak to student groups, meet with teachers, and more. You can? (formerly Twitter). It was gratifying to see the dedication and genuine love of teaching and learning happening in our schools.

Here are some updates for May:

  • Asian Pacific American and Jewish American Heritage Month:?Among many other recognitions in May, this month we honor two important heritages.?Learn more about these and other May recognitions online.?
  • Celebrating Teachers in APS Next Week:?Join us in thanking our outstanding teachers next week for Teacher Appreciation Week. I know our schools are planning special appreciation events and that our students, families and PTAs are joining in the celebration. If you¡¯d like to send a message to your teacher,?.
  • Spring Assessments:?Our schools are currently coordinating end-of-year assessments and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, which are administered to students in grades 3-12 from May 13 through June 7. Additional information can be found online. Your school has also communicated specific dates for your student(s). Please help students do their best by making sure you don¡¯t schedule appointments or days out of school on their test dates. A healthy breakfast and on-time arrival make a big difference! Contact your school with any questions.
  • APS Day at D.C. United on June 1: We look forward to celebrating the end of the school year with APS Day at D.C. United on June 1 as D.C. United offers discounted tickets for the APS community for its match against Montreal. .

Have a wonderful week and enjoy the warm weather!

Sincerely,

Dr. Francisco Dur¨¢n
Superintendent
